Week 1

The Scripture ~ “If we walk in the light as God is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.” 1st John 1:7a

The Spiritual Focus ~ A spark of divine light is within each of us ~ Attributed to Pope Francis

The Devotion ~ Light! This past week “light” was a means used to communicate unity around specific events. We were asked to turn on a porch light to remember abducted children, put a green light in an outdoor lamp to remember our veterans. We were reminded to have our children wear reflective costumes when they trick and treat so they could be seen in the dark and then of course, we turned back the clock so we now notice the light fading earlier in the day. Light is important to us so that we can see. Light helps us see where we are going, feel secure in our journey and experience community with each other, by seeing our neighbor.

Jesus is often referred to as the light that has come into the world to dispel darkness. That is churchspeak that means Jesus changed the course of our journey from certain death, darkness, to life by lighting the path of a new way to live in community. The light of Christ is understood as a divine light that is within each of us, a light that shines as we follow the way of Jesus, a light that we can learn to recognize in each other when we recognize it in ourselves as a gift from God.

Light is important in faith and yoga practices. This past weekend was All Saints Sunday in churches around the world. On All Saints Sunday we talk about the community of saints, remembering the light of those who we love that have died. We bring our light into fellowship with their light and become one divine light in Christ’s promise of the eternal community of the saints.

In Yogadevotion we may use the word namaste. The word namaste means many things, to different people. In India it is used as a simple greeting like hello. In Yogadevotion it means the light of Christ in me recognizes the light of Christ in you…we together are a community of Christ light and love…in fellowship with one another…exactly as God intended from the beginning of time and promises for eternity.
