January 2016

In December I had the opportunity to be one of 3 presenters speaking to HS freshman about career choices. The freshman had asked that the panel include a police officer, artist and a doctor or nurse. I was invited to speak about my nursing experience of 25 years even though the person requesting knew I was currently an ordained Lutheran pastor. The officer told of his journey to become a police officer  as something he always felt he would be good at. The photographer said she had gone to college out of high school and got a degree in a field she thought would be a good fit for her in the IT business. After working in the field for 5 years, in a high profile, high paying job, she decided the trade off of time away from home for the job was too great, she quit her job and became a photographer. Then it was my turn to explain how I chose to become a nurse and how that led to being a pastor, that led to owning a faith based yoga company, it was an interesting journey to share. At the end of the panel discussion when the kids had a chance to ask questions one young man asked, “what one thing would you want us know about choosing a career?” I of course let everyone else go first, I needed time to think. My response came, choose a field that can provide you with enough income to live on, even if it may not be your passion job, while you navigate the path to your passion job. If you have a solid foundation in the beginning of your career journey, your path to a passion career will be more easily realized.

A solid foundation is the beginning of any journey, any path we pursue. A solid foundation will give us space to recognize those opportunities that lead us toward our passion career. In this New Year we have had plenty of encouragement to reflect on the choices we have made, whether it be about job, health or life and to change course if the path we are on is not leading us to the life we desire.

In the biblical story of the Magi, God led them by a star to the Christ Child. In the presence of God they experienced great joy, and listened when God whispered, take a different road home. The best part of that message was it came with God’s promised presence and protection on the road home, the new path.

In my yoga journey I found a strong foundation in asanas was the first step, a step that lead to a passion for the practice. However, what kept me on the path was the whispers from God. For me it would have been easier to stay in a comfortable job, as a nurse, as a parish pastor, and just “do” yoga, but God whispered take a different path, my presence will go with you.

God whispers to all of us, guiding us on the path of love and life. In Yogadevotion we practice listening, we practice awareness of God’s presence. Then we step boldly on our new path trusting the direction that God has pointed us in.

It is still the New Year, what is God whispering to you?

Happy New Year!

Peace,
