A PBS special, “A Path Will Appear,” was the topic of an overheard conversation at a coffee shop. What does it mean that a path will appear? The documentary was about people who felt disconnected from the faith in which they had been brought up (or from religion in general) but had gone on pilgrimage because they still felt called to something greater than themselves. It was while they were on pilgrimage that a path appeared connecting their head with their heart and enabling them to experience the Holy.
Jesus understood that people need different ways in which to hear the Good News of God’s unconditional love, so he taught through signs and wonders, healing, lectures, public discourse, prayer, and retreat. He taught in many ways so that each person could experience God along his or her unique path. A faith-based yoga practice creates sacred space and may be one way to lead people to experience the Holy, to travel back to God. We are all on a journey, a pilgrimage of faith. When we find space in our busy lives to be open ourselves to God’s presence, to acknowledge God in our lives, we too will glimpse a path.
Breath Prayer
Inhale God
Exhale in Me
Focus Pose: I love the straight lines of Five Pointed Star—a trikonasana variation. Stand with feet wide apart, weight evenly distributed and knees soft. Press into the ground with your feet, and on inhalation lift your arms out to the side, shoulder height, as you lengthen your spine. Breathe into the pose and feel your heart opening as your limbs extend straight and long.
