Lent 2 ~ Ignatian Imaginative Prayer

Introduction ~ Padraig O’ Tuama, theologian, author and poet says this of Ignatius, “Ignatius, the salty saint of imagination, had a solution for days when the day escaped you. He suggested a 10-minute reflection where you begin to connect with the source of all Goodness.”

In Yogadevotion Ignatius imaginative prayer practice we invite the story of our day into the stories of Jesus’ day. We sit with a story that Jesus tells, in this case about the kingdom of heaven, and allow our imagination to wander unconfined finding our place in the story. In yoga we often attempt to release thought; however in this prayer form, we direct thought into our imagination. We imagine a relationship and enhance our connection with something Bigger as our source for life.

Story/Scripture ~ “That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach.  And he told them many things in parables, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in a field; it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown, it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”

Questions:

  • Where are you, in the boat, on the shore, in the water?
  • Who is with you?
  • What are you wearing?
